Ear, nose, and throat diseases

  • Bacteriophages are applied in treatment of pyoinflammatory ear diseases (otitis), throat (angina, chronic tonsillitis), and nose (sinusitis).
  • Bacteriophages are applied locally (rinsing, washing, instilling) and orally.
  • Bacteriophages are applied in case of multi-resistance of causative bacteria to antibiotics.
  • Bacteriophages are applied in the treatment of patients with intolerance to antibiotics or contraindications of use thereof.
  • Bacteriophages may be used in combination with the other antimicrobial agents.
  • Bacteriophages may be used for prevention of bacterial exacerbation of virus infections in the risk groups: in elderly people, patients with allergies, immunity compromised patients, patients with chronic diseases.

The pyoinflammatory ear, nose and throat diseases usually develop as exacerbation after acute respiratory viral infection (ARVI). The ear, nose and throat diseases are often caused by opportunistic pathogenic flora – Staphylococci, Streptococci, Pseudomonas Aureginosa, etc. These bacteria inhabit the mucous membranes of the airways almost in every human, and provoke the disease only in case of weakening of the immune system (in particular in case of ARVI). The agents of human opportunistic pathogenic flora often develop multi-drug resistance to antibiotics. Using the bacteriophages in treatment of pyoinflammatory diseases of the ear, nose and throat allows not only eliminating the infection, but also stimulating the own immune responses of the body.

Sinusitis – maxillary sinusitis, frontal sinusitis, ethmoid sinusitis

If rhinitis lasts for over 10 days, there is a yellow-green nasal discharge, headache, photophobia, and lacrimation; we have all reasons to suspect an acute purulent sinusitis – a bacterial disease of paranasal sinuses. In case of sinusitis due to inflammation of the swollen mucous membrane the narrow openings connecting the cavity and the paranasal sinuses are practically completely blocked. The discharge stops effusing, the ventilation and drainage of the sinuses are interrupted, which results in favourable conditions for bacterial growth and increase of inflammation. The air together with purulence and other discharge press upon the sinus walls, and induce pain, and the bacterial toxins and tissue decay products absorbed through the paranasal sinus mucous membrane into blood result in general intoxication of the body.

Without adequate treatment these diseases can transform into a chronic form, cause complications in internal organs. Bronchitis and pneumonias are a lot more frequently reported in patients with a chronic sinusitis.

The treatment of purulent sinusitis includes elimination of rhinedema and evacuation of mucus from the sinuses, as well as antibacterial therapy. To eliminate the infection it is reasonable to apply the products containing bacteriophages, lyzing the most common causative agents of purulent sinusitis, in particular, Pyofag® medicinal product. The phage-products are highly specific – they kill the pathogenic bacteria leaving the useful microflora of the oral cavity and intestinal tract untouched. Due to the high margin of safety Pyofag® is approved for use in children (ref. Instructions). Besides, the bacteriophages stimulate the specific and non-specific immunity factors, which is crucial in case of chronic inflammatory diseases treatment in fragile patients.

In the case of sinusitis Pyofag® medicinal product is applied locally as well as orally.

For local administration cotton turundas are used soaked in the bacteriophage solution (undiluted product). The packs are inserted in the nasal passages after rinsing of the sinuses and left for 1 hour. The packs are changed up to 3 times a day. For nasal rinsing the product is diluted in boiled water of room temperature at the ratio 1:3, that is 10 ml of the product to 30 ml of water.

The product is applied orally according to the age dose 3 times a day 1 hour before meals during 7-20 days.

Otitis

Earache, hearing disorders, and fever may be indicative of onset of otitis. The viral otitis if untreated transforms into a purulent form. The most common form of otitis is otitis media. The bacteria get into the ear cavity from the nasopharynx is case of rhinitis, pharyngitis; they can be brought into the auditory tube with the blood and lymph flow; at an early age inflammation and enlargement of adenoid vegetation can result in blocking of the middle ear opening, and interruption of its natural ventilation. In case of a bacterial otitis the purulence accumulates in the middle ear cavity and spreads the ear-drum. The pain intensifies and begins radiating to the temporal region. The purulence can break the ear-drum and leak out. If the purulence is not discharged, the infection can spread on the surrounding tissues (inner ear, cerebral meninges, trigeminal nerve), result in diminished hearing.

The treatment of purulent otitis includes decreasing of mucosa swelling and restoring of normal communication between the nasal cavity and the middle ear. Anti-inflammatory and anaesthetic medications are applied locally in the form of drops, and systemically. The basis of the purulent otitis treatment is antibacterial therapy. The effective and safe variant of the latter is phage therapy – treatment with bacteriophages, lyzing the most common causative agents of purulent otitis, in particular, Pyofag® medicinal product. The phage products killing the pathogenic bacteria leave the useful microflora untouched. Pyofag® is approved for use in children (ref. Instructions). Bacteriophages stimulate the immune system, which is crucial in the case of chronic inflammatory diseases treatment.

In case of otitis Pyofag® medicinal product is applied locally as well as orally.

For local administration cotton turundas are used soaked in the bacteriophage solution (undiluted product). The turundas are inserted in the auditory passage and left for 1 hour. The turundas are changed up to 3 times a day. The product is applied orally according to the age dose 3 times a day 1 hour before meals during 7-20 days.

Angina (acute tonsillitis)

Severe pain in the throat with a sudden temperature rise up to 38–39°, headache, fatigue, appearance of yellow pustules or grey-white plaque on the tonsils – these are the common symptoms of angina (acute tonsillitis). In most cases angina is caused by streptococcal infection. For a number of reasons (wrong treatment, compromised immunity) the acute tonsillitis can transform into a chronic form, when the throat inflammation is observed constantly, and periodically it aggravates.  Besides, the bacteria inhabiting the tonsils release toxic products which can eventually lead to development of rheumatism, myocarditis, arthritis, glomerulonephritis, etc.

The treatment of angina includes bed regime, increased fluids, and antibacterial therapy – local as well as systematic. It is reasonable to include bacteriophage products in the angina treatment complex, lyzing streptococci and other causative agents of the disease, in particular, Pyofag® medicinal product. The phage products affect only the pathogenic bacteria leaving the useful microflora, and they don’t induce dysbacteriosis. Besides, bacteriophages stimulate the immune system. Pyofag® is approved for use in children (ref. Instructions).

In the case of tonsillitis Pyofag® medicinal product is applied locally as well as orally.

The product is used to wash the throat 3-4 times a day in the amount of 10-20 ml, as well as for target lavage of tonsils. The product is applied orally according to the age dose 3 times a day 1 hour before meals during 7-20 days.
