A summit dedicated to the human microbiome will be held in Paris

The Third European Summit of the Microbiome Movement - Drug Development Europe will be held in Paris on January 28-30, 2019. The summit will focus on the development, production and commercialization of "microbiome" drugs, including those based on bacteriophages.

Thanks to advances in DNA sequencing, metagenomic analysis, and computer data processing, scientists have been able to reassess the importance of the microbiota in the functioning of the human body. The important role of the microbiome as a complex ecological system formed by symbiotic, opportunistic, and pathogenic microorganisms in maintaining health and preventing disease is also confirmed by clinical data. Research aimed at developing so-called "microbiome-based" drugs has been ongoing for several years, and the Paris summit should provide a powerful impetus in this direction, helping scientific ideas to transform into effective and safe medications.

The summit agenda includes discussions of the scientific, regulatory, clinical, manufacturing, and commercial aspects of creating "microbiome" drugs.

One of the summit's focus areas will be an introduction to innovative "microbiome" medicinal products based on microbial bioactive metabolites, genetically engineered bacterial strains, and bacteriophages. Bacteriophages are known to be an important component of the intestinal microbial environment, stabilizing its microbial composition and a highly specific tool for microbiome correction.
