What is a phage cocktail?

A phage cocktail is a medicinal product containing a mixture of several types of bacteriophages capable of destroying various strains of one or more pathogenic bacteria. It is a powerful tool in modern medicine, especially when it comes to treating infectious diseases caused by antibiotic-resistant microorganisms.

Most ready-made phage preparations use this form—phage cocktails, rather than individual phages. This approach provides a broader spectrum of activity and increases treatment effectiveness.

Why choose a phage cocktail rather than a single phage?

One of the main advantages of a phage cocktail is its broad spectrum of activity. Each phage has a narrow specificity—it attacks only certain bacterial strains. Using only one type of bacteriophage runs the risk of it not recognizing the pathogen in a particular patient.

By combining several phages, scientists significantly increase the chances that at least one of them will hit its target. Furthermore, a phage cocktail helps prevent situations where bacteria quickly adapt to a single virus. The mixture exerts pressure on the pathogen from multiple directions, significantly reducing its chances of survival.

This is especially important when treating chronic infections, where bacteria are more likely to mutate.

How phage cocktails are created

Creating a phage cocktail is a complex, multi-step process. First, scientists isolate the phages. These viruses then undergo rigorous testing, assessing their efficacy, stability, safety, and interactions with each other.

It's important that the bacteriophages in a single cocktail don't interfere with each other's activity. If their interaction results in decreased activity, such combinations are excluded from the formula.

Ultimately, an optimal combination is selected that can cover as many pathogens or their strains as possible. This is why ready-made phage preparations sold in pharmacies or used in clinics contain several bacteriophages simultaneously. This ensures the versatility of the product without sacrificing its targeted action.

When are phage cocktails used?

Phage cocktails are actively used against purulent-inflammatory processes, urological infections, intestinal disorders, pneumonia, and for the treatment of infected wounds and burns. They are prescribed when:

  • the presence of several bacterial pathogens simultaneously was established;

  • there is no way to accurately identify the pathogen;

  • the patient has already received antibiotics without effect;

  • There is a suspicion of the presence of superbugs - microorganisms with high resistance to antimicrobial drugs.

In addition, the phage cocktail can be used as a prophylactic agent in surgery or in cases of frequent recurrence of infections, for example, in chronic cystitis or tonsillitis.

Phage cocktails: a modern alternative to antibiotics

In a world of growing antibiotic resistance, phage cocktails are demonstrating promise and flexibility. Thanks to the ability to tailor the formulation to specific patients, create personalized phage preparations, and safely administer them even to children, this field is rapidly gaining momentum.

It should be noted that phage therapy using cocktails is not only the future, but already a reality in some countries, including Ukraine.
